  Prologue 1990

Tears ran down her face as she closed her eyes and let her mind wander to positive thoughts. Despite the disturbing act being done to her, she managed to mentally smile as she thought of Malachi. Her heart ached for him at that very moment. Malachi was her heart, her dream on top of her nightmares. Nightmares she couldn’t bring herself to confess to him or anyone for that matter. In her heart, she knew the outcome would not be good for all parties involved. No one knew what she endured this past year. No one knew of this secret, and in her head, she planned on taking it to her grave.

A sudden high pitch scream brought the act to a halt. While struggling to pull up her underwear, she was pinned down by her throat.

“Shut the fuck up,” he demanded.

“Please, Frantz, let me go! Please! Please don’t do this!” Arianna pled and began to cry hysterically. After glaring at her for what seemed like forever, he let go of her neck and stood up. He placed his exposed penis back into his boxers and zipped up his pants while quietly exiting the room. To say she was relieved would have been an understatement. This past year consisted of constant groping of her buttock area, fondling of her breast and painful fingering, which is what was just taking place. The moment she felt the tip of his manhood at her vagina entrance, she let out a scream hoping he would stop, and to her surprise, it actually worked. Besides all the inappropriate touching and fondling, her virginity remained intact and that made her somewhat happy. Once she stood up and straightened herself, she walked out of the room.

“Hey matant, Ki jan ou ye?” Frantz spoke on the phone to his aunt in Creole, their native language as he made eye contact with Arianna who just entered the room. “Arianna is in the bathroom right now, but I will tell her that you will be working overtime and the overnight shift,” Frantz continued in English. The wicked grin on his face sent chills down Arianna’s spine, “Okay, I will tell her to call you,” he said. As soon as he hung up the phone, he ran towards Arianna and pushed her against the wall as she was attempting to leave the room. “Guess it’s just me and you tonight, cuddy,” he whispered in her ear.

Arianna shrieked, his hot breath was making her nauseas and she just knew she couldn’t take another day of this. As new formed tears flowed down her face, he placed his hands on her private area as he whispered, “I think I changed my mind, tonight is going to be the night. I was going to wait until you turned eighteen to get in this pussy, but three years is too far away, and I’m ready now. Plus, don’t think I don’t know about you hanging out with that punk, Malachi. I’m taking this pussy tonight,” he said wickedly as he removed his hand from her private area. Frantz watched her slide to the floor while she cried uncontrollably. Unmoved by her emotional breakdown; he walked to the door, glanced at her once more, opened the door, and exited the apartment.

  Three Hours Later:

“Man, I’m about to go check out Febria’s big booty ass, I’m hornier than a muthafucker.” Andre adjusted his jacket as he and Malachi walked out of the building into the cool fall breeze. “Where you about to go?” he asked as Malachi tossed the remainder of the cigarette he was smoking into the trash can.

“I’m about to go see what’s up with Riri. I’ve been calling her for the past two hours and she not answering,” Malachi replied.

Andre stopped walking and faced Malachi. “You going over there by yourself?” He glanced at the building where Arianna resided.

“Yeah, Why”? Malachi asked as Andre turned back to face him.

“Man, that bitchass cousin of hers is becoming a problem, and sooner or later he’s going to have to be dealt with; him and his bitchass crew. Those Haitain niggas are so fucking disrespectful, stepping to our territory like they running shit.”

Malachi nodded in agreement. “You right, and we will deal with their asses. That nigga think just because we only fifteen he can fuck with us, but we gonna to just have to show his bitchass.

Andre nodded while he balled up his fist and Malachi followed suit as they dapped. It had always been sort of their secret handshake when they were in agreement.

“But eh, don’t worry about me, I got my strap so I’m not worried about his ass. I just need to speak to my girl, man.” Malachi made his way towards Arianna’s building.

“Aight, I’ll get up with you later, and you need to leave that damn girl alone anyway. She’s stuck up as hell. I told you about her; plus, she’s related to the enemy!” Andre shouted as he walked in the opposite direction. Malachi simply laughed as he continued walking.

  “Later nigga!”

Making his way towards Arianna’s building, Malachi decided to use the backdoor which led straight to the staircase. She mentioned the night before that the elevator was broken. As he entered the building, he caught a glimpse of two police officers speaking with Mrs. Jenkins, an elderly woman who lived on the first floor who calls 911 at least five times a day for one reason or another.

Shaking his head, Malachi continued up the staircase. As he passed the second floor doorway, he heard familiar voices. He attempted to ignore them and make his way to the fourth floor, which is where Arianna’s apartment was located, however, the conversation taking place caught his attention.

Jeff was Frantz’s right hand man while Kyle was a childhood friend who recently just came home from doing a 6 year bid. Knowing Frantz for so long and being that close to him came with the unfortunate privilege of knowing some pretty dark secrets about him. Some were disturbing enough that Jeff considered separating himself from him but as quiet as it’s kept, he feared him more than he would ever care to admit.

“I’m telling you, Kyle, that nigga is crazy, this shit just ain’t right. All I ever wanted was to make money, that’s it, but all this extra shit this nigga got going on, I’m not down with; his own fucking cousin. That nigga is sick as hell,” Jeff explained.

Kyle nodded his head as he sipped on a Heineken. “You right man, but what can we do? Shit, I thought about telling her mom what that nigga been doing to her but truth is, I don’t want any beef with his ass. He’s our means of making money right now and we can’t afford to fuck that up.”

“What’s fucked up more than anything is what that fool did to Candace James.” Jeff went on as he rubbed his chin in deep thought.

Kyle looked at him in confusion. “Candace James?”

“Malachi’s older sister. She was pretty as hell, yo; smooth, dark skin and long black hair. She was like, I think fifteen when that nigga raped her on the roof on top of this building. She was on her way to visit Arianna when that nigga just snatched her up and dragged her to the roof. He had her so shook she never told anyone until she became so depressed she committed suicide by slitting her wrist. Till thi
s day no one in her family knows the real reason she killed herself, including Malachi. She just left a note saying I can’t live anymore. That’s it.”

Jeff and Kyle glared at each other and then both stared off into space lost in their own thoughts. Neither was aware of the other person listening in the whole time.

Slipping away from the door, Malachi took the stairs two at a time with his gun in hand and murder in his blood shot eyes. Words couldn’t describe what he was feeling at that moment. His heart felt shattered in a thousand pieces. Malachi felt as if he failed two of the three most important females in his life. Candace, his beautiful sister, was the sweetest girl you would ever want to meet. She was beautiful inside and out, and identical to their mom Rolonda James. His heart was in excruciating pain as a result of not paying closer attention to what was happening with his sister.

As Malachi approached Arianna’s door, his eyes were blurry from the tears which were falling non stop. He was in a rare form of rage, which would trigger actions that could change his life forever. As he attempted to knock on the door, he noticed it was open. Placing the gun in his hand behind his back, he entered the apartment and shut the door behind him. Walking through the apartment he didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary, nor did he see Arianna, so he made his way to her bedroom which was located at the back of the apartment.

Once he reached her bedroom door, he noticed it was locked so he knocked a total of four or five times but didn’t get an answer. Once he knocked about four more times, he made his way to the kitchen and retrieved a butter knife out of the draw and went back to the door. Malachi was skilled at opening a door with a knife, hell, he could use a credit card if it came down to it. Growing up in the hood, you learned a few tricks, and right now this trick was very necessary. After inserting the knife and wriggling it a bit, the door finally opened. He immediately felt weak at the sight before him. It was déjà vu all over again. Two years prior, he and Andre found his sister, Candace on her bedroom floor with her wrist slit. That image still fresh in his mind. As he managed to find some strength, he rushed to Arianna’s side and kneeled beside her. He tucked the gun and touched her pulse, but he wasn’t sure if he was even checking it correctly.

Standing up and wiping the tears that were rapidly flowing down his face, he quickly picked up her cordless phone that was sitting on the nightstand and dialed 911. “Nine one one, what’s your emergency?” The dispatcher asked.

Out of breath, Malachi spoke into the phone. “My girlfriend, Arianna St. Jean has tried to kill herself! Please, hurry! I don’t feel a pulse! Shit!”

  ________

“Sorry son, but you will not be able to accompany her in the ambulance due to your age. Do you know how we can get in touch with her parents?” The police officer addressed Malachi. Leaning against the wall by the door in the living room, Malachi felt as if his head was spinning. He felt dizzy and light headed as he witnessed the EMT carry Arianna out with a white hospital sheet wrapped around her body. Since the elevator was broken, carrying her on a stretcher was not possible. They were able to resuscitate her when they arrived a short while ago.

A gastric suction would have to be performed once they reach the hospital. Malachi over heard the EMT announce that she swallowed a whole bottle of Diovan, her mom’s blood pressure pills, and half of a bottle of a second blood pressure medication called Metropol. Malachi was in a daze as thoughts of Arianna trying to take her own life haunted him. Visions of finding his sister Candace in the same fashion overwhelmed him at the moment . He wasn’t sure how he managed to provide a statement to the police, but somehow he did; as well as provide Arianna’s mom’s name and work contact information. Once the Officers left, he proceeded to lock up the apartment so he could go find Andre and make his way to the hospital.

As he made his way down the hallway to the staircase, he felt a burning sensation in his right eye. As he rubbed it, he bumped into someone.

  “Watch yourself lil’ nigga”.

The sound of his voice, the sight of him and the smirk on his face set Malachi over the edge. As they passed each other, Malachi reached for his gun underneath his jacket turned around and stuck the gun in the back of Frantz’s head.

“Da fuck?” Frantz stuttered while putting his hands up. “Nigga this is over territory?”

Malachi blinked back tears as he whispered in his ears. “Nah, you bitchass muthafucker, this is for my sister and Arianna,” he pulled the trigger. Once the body fell to the floor, he continued firing until the clip emptied. He then wiped the gun off, dropped it by the body and took off running through the exit door and down the stairs.

Officer Monroe and Officer Johnson were leaving the building when they heard gunshots. Earlier, they were called upstairs to assist with a 911 call on the fourth floor regarding a teenage girl who attempted suicide. They were in the middle of taking Mrs. Jenkins so called burglary statement on the first floor when the call was received. Once they were done with the attempted suicide call, they proceeded to the first floor to complete Mrs. Jenkin’s statement. When they were done with her, they were on their way out the front door of the building and heard shots. A few minutes later they heard footsteps coming down the stairway.

“Freeze! Don’t Move!” Malachi held his hands up with his front to the entrance of the building and his back to the officers.

  One month later:

  Union County Jail

Arianna sat behind the plastic window waiting for Malachi to appear. Living in Elizabeth and attending Elizabeth High School, she passed the Union County Jail a million times, since it was on the same route, however, this was the first time she ever stepped foot inside. Honestly, the place made her nervous; more nervous than actually seeing Malachi. It had been one month since she tried to take her own life and since his arrest. After starting counseling and some much needed rest, she finally found enough courage to come and see him.

As she was lost in her thoughts, Malachi appeared, sat down and picked up the phone which was used for communication between inmates and visitors. She too picked up her phone as they smiled at each other.

“What’s up, Riri, you okay?” Malachi asked.

“Yea, I’m okay.” Arianna replied as she studied his face. “Are you okay?” she asked with unsureness in her voice.

Although Malachi looked well, she was still worried about him. “You know me Riri, I’ll be okay,” he replied as Arianna smiled at the nickname he gave her since they met at ten years old. “So, who did you come here with?” Malachi asked. It was a well known fact, teenagers under the age of eighteen years old were not allowed to visit the inmates without an adult accompanying them. Arianna’s mom, Lorette St. Jean decided to come with her, however, since she wasn’t on Malachi’s visiting list, they didn’t allow her upstairs.

“I came with my mom, she’s downstairs. I’m glad you okay,” Arianna said as she looked him over. Besides a little weight lost, he seemed like he was doing well, despite the circumstances. As she continued studying his face, his eyes turned rather dark as he cleared his throat.

“Riri, why didn’t you tell me or your mom what was going on with you?”

Immediately, tears filled her eyes. She had been dreading this conversation. Besides the therapist she was meeting with, she hadn’t even shared the details of what she went through with her mom. She just wasn’t ready, but with Malachi’s circumstance, she didn’t want to not answer his question.

“I was scared, Mal. I was so scared. He would hit me and threaten me. I was so scared,” she confessed as her voice cracked and tears fell from her eyes.

Malachi’s eyes softened as he watched her cry, “Stop crying, okay. You could have told me, and that faggot touched my sister… he...” Malachi couldn’t get the rest of his words out as he closed his eyes.

“I’m sorry,” Arianna said as in a tone well above a whisper. “He was crazy, he really scared me and he scared Candy so bad. He was threatening to kill you, so that’s why, uuhm…. I mean—
At that moment, Arianna wasn’t able to finish her sentence because she realized she made a huge mistake and said way too much. Malachi’s eyes began to water as he clenched his jaw.

“You knew?” he asked in a voice barely recognizable.

Arianna wasn’t able to look him in the eyes.

“You knew what was happening to my sister and you didn’t say anything!” Malachi yelled.

Arianna still said nothing and Malachi officially lost it at that moment. Using the phone to bang on the window repeatedly he screamed and cursed at her. Arianna began crying hysterically as she dropped the phone and stood up holding her stomach.

  “I’m sorry!”

“Nah, fuck that! I don’t want to hear you’re fucking sorry! My sister killed herself

because of your punk ass cousin! You should’ve told me! You should’ve fucking told me!” Malachi continued banging on the window until four correction officers grabbed him and pulled him away. He continued yelling obscenities as he managed to get one last look at Arianna before the guards pulled him away.

Feeling distraught, Arianna turned to one of the guards as he walked over and informed her it was time for her to leave. Taking one last look at the door they just pulled Malachi through, she sighed and exited out the visitor’s doorway.

  Three Years Later:

  Union County Jail

“Damn nigga, you getting big. Fuck they feeding you in here?” Andre smiled as Malachi sat down and picked up the phone.

  “All muscles nigga” Malachi smiled.

Andre laughed. “Yeah, I see. You been benching everyday?”

“Yeah, when these fools not acting up and we not on lock.” Malachi said as Andre nodded.

“Oh, aight. So is everything okay with you?” Andre asked.
